Medora itinerary scene

Weekend itinerary

A landscape-first Medora weekend.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park brings the big scenery; the better weekend gives it one strong outing, a few unhurried views, and an evening that is simple enough to protect the next morning.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

The South Unit scenic drive crosses rolling Badlands beside prairie dog towns, wildlife habitat, and short-trail pullouts west of Medora.

Best length

2 nights

Arrive Friday, use Saturday for the South Unit and a Medora evening, then visit Painted Canyon or a town history site before leaving Sunday.

Stay

AmericInn by Wyndham Medora

An in-town hotel for travelers who want the South Unit entrance, Medora restaurants, and show-night venues close…

Main activity

Theodore Roosevelt Park

The South Unit is the main day: visitor center, current open road, wildlife pullouts, and one short walk. Medora supplies the museums, restaurants, and summer amphitheater evening.

Pace

One park day, one Medora evening

Fits first-time visitors who want the South Unit scenic drive, wildlife stops, one short trail, and time for Medora's museums or summer show.

Friday

Friday: Painted Canyon, check-in, and dinner in Medora

Travelers arriving on I-94 can stop at Painted Canyon before checking in. Eat in town, confirm Saturday's NPS conditions, and check show times if the Medora Musical is running.

Saturday

Saturday: South Unit scenic drive and a Medora show night

Start at the South Unit Visitor Center, see the Maltese Cross Cabin, then follow the open scenic-road segments for overlooks, prairie dog towns, wildlife, and one short walk.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to Medora before the evening reservation

Leave enough time to shower, eat, and reach the Burning Hills Amphitheatre. The Pitchfork Steak Fondue and Medora Musical are seasonal, ticketed events rather than guaranteed walk-up stops.

Sunday

Sunday: western history or Painted Canyon before I-94

Choose Chateau de Mores or the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame if you want more Medora history. Painted Canyon is the shorter final stop for an eastbound departure.
